Crowns and other large silver coins

These are some of the other crown sized silver coins that I have. Not all are crowns in the strict sense of the word but they are all large silver coins of comparable size: Additionally, a page of silver Rupees can be found here, and a page of Egyptian silver coins here some of which are also crown sized but I have kept them in those particular pages and not reproduced them in the table below.

William III - England

Mint: Royal mint

Obverse: Bust of King William facing right, GVLIEIMUS III DEI GRA
Reverse: Crowned cruciform shields dividing date with central Nassau lion, 16 96.MAG BR.FRA ET.HIB REX
Date: 1696 1 Crown

In the 1690s, the English silver coinage was in severe disarray. Most coins in circulation were old, heavily worn, or, crucially, had been clipped meaning the silver content was much less than the face value. Coins dated 1696 are among the first large denomination silver pieces struck under a new, strict weight standard established by an Act or Parliment under the supervision if Sir Issac Newton.

George IV was a lover of luxery and at an estimated £238,000 (more than 20 times the cost of the previous coronation), his coronation was the most expensive in British history. At the coronation banquet the traditional medieval ritual of the King's Champion (a hereditary position held by the Dymoke family), challenged anyone to deny the King's right to the Crown while riding on horseback in full armor for the last time. This crown was the first struck under his reign.

Reverse: Crowned cruciform shields around central Garter star, sceptres with national emblems in angles, divided date above, legend around. BRITT: REG: 18 87 FID: DEF :

Date: 1887 Double Florin

The Double Florin was introduced in 1887 as part of the new coinage celebrating Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. It was intended to be Britain's step toward decimalization, as it was exactly one-tenth of a pound, or four shillings. However, the designers failed to include the denomination (or value) on the coin itself. The Double Florin was similar in size to the old crown but the main problem, however, was its near-identical appearance to the Half Crown meant using it in dark and dingy pubs or shops led to widespread confusion and minting was stopped after only 4 years.
